Lend Lease Project Management and Construction is one of the world’s leading project management and construction companies, forming part of the Lend Lease integrated property client. Our established environmental policy demonstrates our commitment to upholding high standards of sustainability wherever we have a presence. This policy drives our Environmental Management System (certified to ISO14001) which
informs all stages of our operations, ensuring that effective sustainability measures are implemented across all our projects.
With our clients, designers, trade contractors and suppliers we endeavour to improve the environment on and around our sites. We have a systematic approach to reducing our carbon footprint by:
- increasing the use of sustainable materials and equipment
- reducing waste
- increasing reuse/recycling
More specifically on the responsible sourcing of materials, procurement of responsibly sourced materials and avoidance of harmful materials form an essential part of our strategy to be a sustainable organisation. Our target is that our key construction materials will meet credible certification standards by the end of 2010.
Timber: On our work over the past eight years to procure timber from credibly certified sources such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has led to the following performance in 2009 (verified data):
- 83% of timber used on our projects is FSC verified or recycled
- 96% timber procured on our projects is from certified sources or recycled (approx 40,000 cu metres)
Concrete, steel reinforcement, brick and block work: The standard for responsible sourcing of construction products was established in 2008. In 2008-9 we worked with the supply chain to achieve BES 6001 (BRE Standard) accreditation for concrete procurement. We now specify concrete and rebar steel to this standard and its application is being explored for brick and block work, ensuring that we manage the risk for our clients in this area.
The implementation of our supply chain strategy on sustainability has been acknowledged as best in class winning the Business in the Community Example of Excellence for Responsible Supply Chain in 2010.
“By engaging with peer organisations across its industry, Lend Lease really punched above its weight. We were particularly impressed by the leadership and forward thinking of the company, and its openness in communicating progress.”
Andrew Hinkly, Global Head of Procurement, Anglo American, chair of the judges from Business in the Community Award, July 2010
